The yoga class was followed by a welcome speech by 8Shades founder, Emily Lam Ho and a talk from Cobe Ng, aka. @cobessentials, a certified nutritionist – who shared tips on how to stay healthy during COVID-19. She also spoke about Allklear, the sponsor of the event, and some of their product offerings.

Did you know that if 30% of consumers switched to Allklear’s Detox Future Salad, 515,000 tons of greenhouse gases would be avoided, as well as over 11,000 tons of plastic containers and more than 1,200 tons of unconsumed vegetable waste in Hong Kong each year?

After the enlightening talk, guests were treated to a healthy breakfast buffet, which included wraps, vegetable buns, assorted pastries and lemon ginger and turmeric shots.

Recap: 8Shades Breakfast Club, Teapigs Edition

Our second edition of the #8ShadesBreakfastClub took place last weekend (31 July & 1 August 2021) at the Kerry Hotel, Hong Kong – this time with a special talk by Simon Disler, founder of Drinks99 and distributor of Teapigs in Hong Kong.

If you weren’t able to make it there in person, here’s everything you need to know to get all caught up:

Guests at the #8ShadesBreakfastClub flowed with Karina aka. @karina.yogawellness and Tavia aka. @taviajianghui for a 50-minute Yin & Yang flow class – a combination of Hatha yoga, core strengthening and full body blood circulation.

Besides active, flowing sequences, the class also included longer-held Yin poses that allowed for deeper stretches, which help the mind become more still and the body more flexible.⁣

Teapigs prepared a special tea tasting session of their latest cold brew teas, which are formulated to brew quickly in cold water – perfect for the hot Hong Kong summer. Flavours sampled included blackcurrant and raspberry, pink grapefruit, and watermelon and hibiscus.

Simon Disler of Drinks99 (the distributor of Teapigs in Hong Kong) gave an inspirational talk about his own journey into sustainability – from doing a conservation project in Costa Rica at the age of 18 to forging a deeper connection with sustainability after he became a father just 18 months ago.

Did you know? Teapigs is one of the first tea companies to go plastic-free – their tea bags are made from cornstarch, a natural carbohydrate extracted from corn, while the labels are made of paper. Everything is sealed with heat, so there’s no glue either!

Before finishing up with a delicious healthy breakfast at Kerry Hotel’s Lobby Lounge, our founder Emily Lam-Ho and fellow tea-lover reminded everyone that it’s about making small but conscious decisions to live a more sustainable life.

“I love tea – I went to boarding school in England so tea is a big part of my life,” she said. “When I realised that a lot of tea bags were made out of plastic, it really shocked me. So, we can all take little steps and little choices in life that together will have a bigger impact.”

Lululemon Announces Mushroom-based Accessories

Cult yoga gear brand lululemon is planning to launch a line of yoga accessories made using Mylo, a vegan leather made entirely from mushrooms. The collection will feature a yoga mat, a yoga bag and a duffle bag.

Mylo is incredibly easy and eco-friendly to produce, taking just days to produce. According to developers Bolt Threads, the material is strong, won’t scuff and feels almost exactly like leather.

The development of Mylo couldn’t have come sooner; the leather industry is damaging to not only animals and human health, but it is extremely damaging to the environment. Pollution generated by the tanning process can make its way into water sources, contaminating it and making it dangerous to drink. Lululemon is part of a group of fashion brands all working to develop products using Mylo, which includes Adidas and Stella McCartney.

Lululemon has revealed the first yoga accessories made of Mylo, a plant-based material made from renewable mycelium.

Thankfully, though, more and more brands are working to make the fashion industry more sustainable; after all, it accounts for around 10% of greenhouse gas emissions each year! One way brands are doing this is investing in novel materials. Besides Mylo, other unique sources of vegan leather include tree pulp, grapes, apples, pineapples and kombucha.

Sadly, we’ll have to wait until early 2022 to get our hands on the products, but that gives us time to make the rest of our wardrobe more sustainable. Check out our guide on the most and least sustainable fabrics

The new mushroom-based line is part of lululemon’s efforts to improve its sustainability credentials through the use of environmentally-friendly materials. Other efforts include its resale programme launched earlier this year, which will allow lululemon to save up to 50% of the product’s carbon footprint.
