From Beyonce to Kim Kardashian and yes, even Snoop Dogg, celebrities of all types have experimented with the vegan or plant-based diet at one point or another – as evidenced by their social media feeds. In celebration of World Vegan Month (November), here are eight celebrities that you might not have known are vegan.
1.
Ariana Grande

Ariana has been a vegan since 2013, saying that she had “eaten organically since she was little and always kept meat minimal,” but that she had decided to go full-on vegan. The next year, she further explained her decision to adopt a vegan diet, saying, “I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding. But I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-around happier person. It is tricky dining out, but I just stick to what I know – veggies, fruit and salad – then when I get home I’ll have something else.”
2.
Lewis Hamilton

World champion Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has been super vocal about his plant-based lifestyle. Since going vegan in 2017, he has encouraged his followers to go vegan, ditch leather and boycott animal exploitation.
He even created a plant-based fast food chain called Neat Burger that has locations around the UK.
He told Men’s Health in an interview, “When I switched to a plant-based diet, those highs and lows [of energy] decreased significantly. The benefits keep coming, and I’ve honestly never felt better.” He says his only regret is that he didn’t go vegan sooner!
3.
Zac Efron

Zac Efron has made significant life changes in recent years, including transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle. He credits veganism for his super-buff physique, saying it has “completely changed the way that my body works, and the way that I metabolise food, the way it turns into energy, the way that I sleep. It’s been brilliant. It’s been great for my exercise, and great for my routine.”
4.
Benedict Cumberbatch

Marvel actor Benedict Cumberbatch is not as vocal about his veganism as other celebrities, revealing small bits of information about his diet. He has said that he went plant-based to get in shape for his role as Doctor Strange in 2016 and never looked back. On the press tour for Avengers: Infinity War, he also mentioned a few times that he was a vegan.
5.
Joaquin Phoenix

The Oscar-winning actor has always been vocal about being a vegan, saying that he made the switch at three years old! He even devoted his Oscar acceptance speech to slamming the “cruel” dairy industry.
As well as featuring in a number of vegan billboard ads for PETA, he also regularly attends protests and vigils.
6.
Billie Eilish

Billie is also an outspoken advocate of veganism, committing to a plant-based diet when she was 12 years old. She says that after doing research into the meat industry and its processes and ethics, she didn’t feel comfortable consuming animal products anymore. “Once you know that kind of thing and you see it, it’s really hard to go back,” she says.
She even has her own vegan perfume!
7.
Natalie Portman

The Oscar-winning actress has been vegetarian since she was nine, and made the switch to veganism in 2011. Since then, she has regularly used her influence to help animals and even though she briefly stopped being a vegan during her pregnancy, she returned to it in 2018. She even credits her beauty to eating a vegan diet, saying that her skin improved once she became a vegan.
8.
Lizzo

Finally, pop star Lizzo is a recent convert, making the switch to a vegan diet in 2020 after being a vegetarian for seven years. Not only that, but she says that she’s been exploring raw veganism, sticking to mostly organic, uncooked and unprocessed foods, including lots of vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruits and grains. Raw veganism is said to boost your immune system and give you an energy boost. It can also lower blood pressure and reduce your risk of stomach cancer and stroke.
It’s official – Hollywood is going vegan! Take a leaf out of these celebrity’s books and try to commit to a more plant-based diet – whether that’s making the full switch, or just enjoying Meatless Monday. Either way, you’ll be doing your part for the planet, while having a delicious time doing it.
